Solidago flexicaulis, Zig Zag Goldenrod, Quart pot

$8.00

Solidago flexicaulis, Zig Zag Goldenrod

PS to Shade, Zone 3, Blooms August - October, 3’ x 1-2’, Medium wet to medium dry, deer resistant

We coniinue to add native plants that like shadier conditions. Every native garden needs at least one goldenrod plant. If you have hesitated because your garden is too shady, Zig Zag Goldenrod is a solution. Like many other natives it does well in a variety of conditions. This includes soil that may be on the sandy side or a small amount of clay. This goldenrod gets it’s name from the placement of flowers on the stem which create a zig zag. The plant spreads by rhizomes and may be aggressive in it’s favored conditions. We have it planted in partial shade, afternoon sun. The plant has grown in size but doesn’t appear to spread too much.

We acquired Zig Zag during the fall of 2022. We will update here on our experience with this plant. We are allocating space in our Soul Garden for a late season - Goldenrod & Aster display. Be sure to come by this season. We have Zig Zag in our Rose Garden, it is lovely and well behaved.

It is the larval host plant for several moths. It attracts Mining “specialist” bees. Unlike other bees who frequent this plant, they collect pollen to provision there fall nests with. Many other bees, solitary wasps and soldier beetles visit for nectar.
