FS - Dappled Shade, Zone 3, blooms July - Sept, 4’ x 2.-3’, moisture normal to dry once established
We are super excited to offer this woodland native and perennial sunflower. The plant does well in a variety of settings and can be grown in FS. It does best in PS or Dappled shade. It also tolerates many different soil conditions and moisture levels including dry sandy or moist sandy conditions. Prefers well-drained. This is not a plant for small garden spaces. It is known to form large colonies, in it’s favored edge of woodland space.
It is considered a Keystone species because it supports up to 75 butterfly and moth caterpillars including the Silvery Checkerspot and Painted Lady. In addition it supports 6 different specialist bees that rely on the pollen from this plant to raise their broods. Many other bees such as long-tongue, sweat bees are drawn to the nectar and pollen. This plant draws many different insects including aphids, beetles, true bugs, weevils which provide food for beneficial insects.
The seeds feed song birds, the foliage forms good cover for small wildlife.
