Anemone canadensis, Canada Anemone
FS-PS, Zone 3. blooms May to June, 1’ x 1’, medium-wet to medium, deer resistant
This native appears fragile, but is a tough native that can thrive in many planting locations. Makes a terrific ground cover during the growing season. The five-petal, pure white, cup-shaped flower sits a top a wiry stalk that protrudes from the plant mound. It spreads by thick rhizomes that form colonies. Divide in the fall.
The blooms attract small native bees including Mining, Sweat bees and Hover Flies. It blooms at a time when the early native bees are just emerging and starting their broods, providing the essential tools to do so.
We have this plant in our Rose Garden which is a delightful place in spring and early summer and is a partial shade setting, mostly morning sun.. We typically do not water and rely on rain. It does spread, but not overly in these conditions. We have read that abundant moisture also supresses the spread.
